This cult classic, based on Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, is considered by many to be one of the top Western movies of all-time, but my recent viewing left me disappointed. I'm sure that nostalgia plays a large role when reviewing these movies. I remember it from my childhood. The music theme is iconic, the story is well-known.
Yul Brunner and especially Steve McQueen are great in this. The rest of the cast is forgettable. Well, apart from Horst Buchholz, whose performance I will definitely not forget. His acting is ridiculously bad, it's almost painful to watch.
The final battle resembles slapstick comedy. I will need to rewatch the 2016 remake, but can't imagine that it's worse than this, despite that being the general consensus. Movies were different back in the days, but either this didn't age very well, or they weren't all that good. This one was difficult to rate. Today, this would definitely not be a 3-star movie, which is a decent rating on this website.
